A civil jury awarded Senator Rand Paul over $580,000 for his assault and battery against his neighbor.  In November 2017, Paul's neighbor tackled him and broke three of Paul's ribs.  The neighbor pled guilty to criminal charges of felony assault.  In the later civil trial, the jury awarded Paul $375,000 for punitive damages, $200,000 for pain and suffering, and $8,000 for medical expenses.  Paul noted after the jury verdict that it is never ok to turn "disagreements into violent, aggressive anger."  Although most people realize the criminal implications of assault and battery, they do not understand how large the civil claim may be as well.  Substantial verdicts for both compensatory and punitive damages are common in such cases.
